HARRY WATTS

COMMISSION: B.B,ESQUIRE

Portrait commission for B.B,Esquire of James Dickson, Founder of Workshop Coffee Co — formerly ST. ALi and Sensory Lab. See the full article here.

COMMISSION : The Armoury

The Armoury is a store based in Hong Kong and was established in 2010 by Alan See and Mark Cho, born from their passion for classic styling and interest in the unique stories behind well-crafted men’s products. It is their response to today’s trend of insubstantial products masked by expensive advertising.

They strive to find companies, factories, workshops and craftsmen dedicated to their product and craft. They are selective with who they choose as our artisans and aim to work closely with them in partnership. As a result, they sell only products that The Armoury can be proud to represent – products made with quality craftsmanship, outstanding design and timeless style.

Between April 20th and 21st The Armoury with Liverano (Tailor) and Carmina (Shoemaker) will be popping up in London to sell its wears and to showcase some of the best products you can buy. It will all be taking place at the Rook and Raven Gallery send a little email over to [email protected] to book an appointment.

So to why I have told you all of that. I was commission to photograph some still lives for this event. So have a look and maybe I shall see you down there. See the blog post here.

COMMISSION : B.B,Esquire

Here we are again. Another B.B,Esquire commission up and online. This was one of the first I did for them. Myself and James went to go and meet Mr. Timothy Everest. A wonderful and brilliant tailor at his studio in London. As James sat with Tim I went off exploring the four story building to find the great people that make his works. The layout of this place was amazing as in the basement they made the trousers , then on the ground floor they made the shirts then on the first floor they made the jackets. One of these features that’s is simple but yet says a lot about the person behind it.

I really enjoy these jobs from B.B, Esquire and I have been continuing them so watch out here and on their site for more to come.

COMMISSION : SATURDAY TELEGRAPH MAGAZINE

Last weekend, 10th March, I woke up at 5am wondering if I could go get a copy of the Telegraph yet? I thought against it and went back to sleep. Only to be awaken by a phone call from my mother asking if I had seen the picture in the paper? “of course I said, I took it!” I got up and down to the newsagents and bought up two copies of the Telegraph and headed home to find my hard work.

Sitting at my brothers dinning room table I opened up the magazine and found the portrait of Rachel Cusk and the still lives. This commission was for the “World of” feature. I worked with the writer Jessica Salter on this piece and it was the first time for me to be working with a writer. I am rather pleased with the portrait and to see it as a full page was a great feeling. I hope to get more like this soon. Here are the selection of still lives and Rachel’s portrait.

TALK : MINICLICK

A week has passed now after I stood, sat, in front of a wonderful crowd at the 19th Mini Click talk. I was feeling rather nervous at the sat but once I got going I had a great time. I would like to say to all that came to listen and show support, a massive thank you. I would also like to thank Mr Jim Stephenson who hosted and set up the event. You can see him below introducing me, thanks to Adam Bronkhorst for the photograph.

I am sure in time Jim will get the recording of the talk up online so those of you who missed it can listen to me go on and on about myself for an hour! At the end of the talk I gave the audience I little sneak peak in to some brand new work, the work is called SITE and I thought that I would pop just one image up here for you’re eyes. Check back later this year for more on this piece of work on also a new FINDS newspaper.

PUBLISHED : FINDS – BEHIND THE IMAGE

Well today have been long coming, I have heard about my involvement with this book for a few month, but have waited to tell you all until I have some visual proof.

So the book is called, ‘Behind the Image’ It has been written by Natasha Caruana and Anna Fox and published by AVA Books. The book is the third in its series to be used as a resource for photography students, enthusiasts and professionals too. On the publishers website it says,

BCP Behind the Image HR CVR.jpgBCP Behind the Image Harry Watts project 156-7.jpg

‘By looking at how successful photographers have produced meaningful canons of work, Behind the Image gives readers the creative edge today’s photographers need to make their work stand out from the crowd. The book’s generous selection of images brings together an eclectic range of photographic styles and genres, creating a refreshing and inspiring resource for all.’

Also my wonderful old tutor, old in time not in age, Fergus Heron gave his views on the book here.

‘Caruana and Fox have written an important and timely book. Broad in scope, with focused examples, this is an effective and engaging introduction to the convergences of practice and theory; spontaneity and systematic enquiry; critical engagement and creative exploration that research in photography involves.’

Now that it’s been said that I am to become a successful photographer I think I am going to go retire in the south of France and drink red wine all day. Sounds nice but I think I have a bit more work todo. I spoke to Natasha today about how she came across my work, she found STUDIO when marking students work at Farnham and then on Twitter. But it was also one evening in London when I had put a stack of FINDS newspapers outside the Hotshoe Gallery.

Its a real pleasure and I feel honoured to have my work published in this book. I once said to my father that I would be happy with my career when my work was studied in University. Now knowing that this had been done and will be via this book I have to now find another goal, maybe a retrospective at the TATE.

Go buy the book here its only £15 right now so what a bargain, also you should follow Natasha on Twitter @NatashaCaruana

TALK : Mini Click

I am not going to say much about this talk as I am right in the middle of writing it and I can type any more today about myself. So I shall let the link speak for itself. I will write a post after the event and let you know how it went if you could not attend.

COMMISSION : B.B,Esquire

This is going to be a group posting as over the last few months I have been working for an online journal called B.B,Esquire:

‘B.B, Esq. is a guide to the 250 most interesting, exciting and alluring places in London. A resource for gentlemen with personality, style and a sense of adventure. In your pocket or at home, the guide is here to help you find where to go. From the best barista in town to the bespoke tailor steeped in centuries of tradition — we seek out what makes modern life all the more enthralling.

The journal features an intercontinental mix of contributors. With observations, interviews and reflection on subjects of style and equipment to cultural theory and urban exploration — providingdirection and commentary on the modern city.

B.B, Esq. draws its name from a man of exceptional and extravagant tastes, the original dandy of them all — Beau Brummel. A suitable beginning for a fresh look at his hometown, this beautiful, brutal city called London.’ Taken from there Website.

So they have sent me two five locations to shoot along side an interview, here follows an image and a link to the five shoots of far.

COMMISSION : LEON

I have been on Twitter for over a year now and its a wonderful resource to talk and disseminate my photography. But I also use it to talk about where and what I am doing. One evening I was on my way to London to go eat at LEON a restaurant chain that many of you in London I’m sure have been to. I have cooked out of their books for ages now and was excited to go. I found the founder on Twitter Mr Henry Dimbleby and told him just the same.

IMG_1829.JPG

Within a few moments I had a reply and was asked if I didn’t food photography, to which I replied yes of course. I was then asked by Henry to prove my worth in the restaurant that evening and to show him what I could do. I only had my X100 with me but I did what was asked of me. In return I had a free meal.

The next day I sent the images off to Henry, I was then contact by there PR and asked to document their launch event for their new book, Baking & Puddings. So here are a few images from that shoot.

And from social media has come further work with them, which I shall show you all soon.
